Originair ready to fly again Andrew Board Originair’s owner says he is “a day or two” away from announcing a new deal to get the fledging airline carrier back in the skies. The Nelson-based airline started commercial flights last August with a service from Nelson to Palmerston North, it later expanded to include a Nelson to Wellington service. But in March, the airline – which is owned by former Origin Pacific and Air

Nelson owner Robert Inglis – was grounded when the Civil Aviation Authority placed restrictions on Air Freight Ltd operating Originair planes, over safety concerns. Robert says he has made “good progress” on getting his two aircraft flying again. “Yes, we have progressed, but I probably need another day or two before I can make an announcement on that, I just

Musicians to compete for Snaparock Nelson musicians will have the chance to compete for a spot on the hottest gig in town. Snaparock is coming to the Trafalgar Centre in September, featuring a line-up of Aussie rockers. But opening the show will be a local act and Nelson Weekly readers will have the chance to decide who it will be. A competition between promoters of the festival and Nelson Weekly, Waimea Weekly and nelsonlive.co.nz will see local musicians enter the competition to play at the concert. Local readers can then go online and cast a vote for their favourite. The

Andrew Board Editor

andrew@nelsonweekly.co.nz three acts with the most votes will then be put in front of Dynosaurs band member Graham Bidstrup, who will pick the overall winner. Event manager Aly Cook says it’s a great way to build excitement ahead of the concert. “It’s going to be a huge event so it’s great that we can give a local act this kind of opportunity.” Acts have until the end of May -New Zealand Music Month -- to enter the competition, with the voting

process open during the month of June. To enter, bands need to submit a blurb about themselves, why people should vote for them and a YouTube link to a music video or them performing. The winning band will also receive a voucher from Begg’s Musicworks. Aly says interest in the two-day Snapafest, of which Snaparock is the first event, has been huge. “We’re really happy with the interest and we’re getting a lot of people from outside Nelson enquiring about it.” To enter the competition, email details to open4snaparock@gmail.com.

The Metservice has confirmed what everybody already suspected, that last month was the sunniest April on record and forecasters are predicting the warm, sunny weather will continue into May. The Metservice reported on Monday that 248 hours of sunshine was recorded at Nelson Airport in April, beating the previous high of 247.6 hours recorded in April 2012. April was also drier and warmer than usual with just 38mm of rain, 47 per cent of the monthly average, and a mean temperature of 14.4 degrees Celsius,

1.2 degrees above average for April. Meteorological data has been recorded at Nelson Airport since the early 1940s. And Metservice’s Georgina Griffiths says May is also shaping up to be dry and sunny after some initial rain later this week and early next week. “Temperatures in May could be as much as two degrees above average in Nelson and around much of the country,” Georgina says. “We could be in for a record May as well.”

However, Georgina says there are a couple of active fronts heading our way and they are expected to bring some rain later this week and again early next week. “We’ve had highs dominating, but for the first time we see a couple of low pressure systems coming and they’ll bring some rain next week. But we’ll return to the good weather by week three in May.” Georgina says the warm temperatures have been caused by “warmer seas around New Zealand and especially around Taranaki and Nelson.”

want to get all my ducks in a row. But we have made a lot of progress.” A Christchurch football team confirmed they had a chartered booking for May 21 cancelled by Originair, with pilot unavailability given as the reason. The company’s social media accounts have also gone quiet. The airline’s Facebook page was updated almost daily until March 10, when all activity stopped. Robert says having planes sitting on the tarmac instead of flying has been “a real disappointment, but sometimes life is like that”. “We’ve made good process and after getting over my crop harvest I’ve been focusing on getting a war-chest together to get the past tided up and get on,” says Robert, who also has business interests in the horticulture industry. He didn’t want to comment further until he had things “neat and tidy”.

The closure of Nelson-based NZ Classic Motorcycles has bike enthusiasts from all over the country rallying to save the multi-million collection. The Haven Rd museum closed its doors to the public last weekend, following an announcement from owner Tom Sturgess, back in February, saying that the closure was a result of his recent illness. But local motorcycle buff Adrian Curtis, who is the manager of Tyres & More on St Vincent St, is on a mission to keep the collection in Nelson and is generating interest to buy the collection. “It seems such a crazy shame to see it go,” he says. “We’ve seen World of WearableArts go, and now this. It’s such a waste.” Adrian started spreading the word last week, through Facebook and his radio show, Houston Motor Group All Sports Breakfast. He says the response so far has been “amazing”. “I’ve had people calling and emailing me from all over New Zealand saying, ‘hey, if you

Stoke centre concerns doused by users Andrew Board

Stoke Seniors have shot down concerns raised over the new Stoke Community Centre, saying access for elderly and a lack of car parking are “non-issues”. Nelson City Council plans to build a $6.14 million Stoke Community Centre on Greenmeadows, with work starting this September. Last Thursday, the council organised a gathering of community groups to speak with media. The groups included Stoke Rugby Club, Stoke Tennis Club, Nelson Cricket and Stoke Seniors. Not surprisingly, all were delighted with the new plans for a centre, saying it is “exciting”, “great for Stoke” and “a gamechanger”. Recent criticisms from some council candidates and other residents have included that it is on the wrong side of Main Rd Stoke, that it will be too dangerous for elderly residents to cross the main road to get to the centre, that there isn’t enough car parking and that there has been a lack of consultation. Nelson Weekly put all those concerns to Allen Johnson and John

We’re hugely excited, we Change is always difficult can’t wait. Haynes of the Stoke Seniors, which organises activities for its 400 members five days a week. Allen’s reply to the concerns raised? “What utter bulls***”. “Very, very few walk to Stoke Seniors,” he says. “We have three

members are all for it and they will be using it every week,” says Allen. Other groups were just as damning of attempts to stop the centre being built. “From our point of view, the consultation was excellent,” says Kim Biggs

of the Stoke Rugby Club. “There were plenty of meetings for people to attend. If people didn’t become part of the consultation it’s perhaps because they didn’t come to the meetings, rather than there being a lack of meetings.” Mayor Rachel Reese says the criticisms should be taken with a “grain of salt”. “I’ve heard that the main road is a barrier, but actually I don’t see it like that. I think part of getting Stoke to become a village and a hub, and to feel like a destination, to have activity on both sides of the road, so that when you come through Stoke you’re not just going past the backs of shops and not recognising what’s here. “If I’m being really blunt with you, I think election candidates sometimes need something to talk about. With a campaign on I can draw the dots.” Pauline Smith of the Stoke Tennis Club says some of the members have voiced concerns over the lack of car parking, but the vast majority of members support the new centre. Resource consent for the centre has been granted, with the tender process due to begin in June.

NMIT’s new chair is a former student

The incoming chairman for NMIT is a former student at Nelson Polytechnic. Daryl Wehner’s appointment as chair of the Nelson Marlborough Institute of Technology completes a grand circle for the bornand-bred Nelsonian.

His appointment is one of a number announced by tertiary education minister Steven Joyce. Daryl is a chartered accountant and the chief financial officer at Port Nelson Ltd, and replaces Ross Butler who completes ten years on the council in

May, the last six as chair. Daryl says he has a big task carrying on the “excellent work Daryl of Ross Butler’s Wehner leadership”. He says NMIT will continue to take advantage of being

in a region which is a New Zealand leader in aquaculture, viticulture and winemaking, and the aviation and maritime industries. “Our education programmes in these disciplines are reflecting our special position”.

Auto parts store heading to St Vincent St building A new building going up on the corner of St Vincent St and Washington Rd will soon be home to an auto-parts store. Nelson Weekly made contact with the client, Jibb Investments Ltd, in midApril, but they declined to comment on the development, which is opposite

U-Save Tyres. However, three different sources have confirmed that the large building will be home to an auto-parts store. The Weekly contacted large auto-parts chain store Supercheap Auto’s head office in Australia for confirmation yesterday, but were unable to reach

anyone due it being a public holiday in that country. Nelson City Council recieved a resource consent application for the development late last year, and several houses were demolished to make way for the building, which has gone up quickly over the last few months.

Reward offered after burglars hit businesses Andrew Board

Several Nelson businesses were targeted during a mini crimespree on Anzac night and it’s left one local business owner so annoyed he’s put up a reward for information leading to an arrest. The Car Company’s managing director Shane Drummond says he’s willing to offer a reward after his commercial yard on Rutherford St was broken into. He says three laptops, tools and battery packs were taken, along with beer from the staff fridge. “One of the staff arrived in the morning to find the window was open and the door was open, yet no staff were here.” Shane says they do have security cameras on site but they entered through a “blind-spot”. “It looks like they’ve worn gloves as well because there are no prints.” In Richmond on the same night, a rooftop burglar hit the Richmond

Mall, smashing through a skylight above Ambrosia Cafe and entering the premises using one of the mall’s roof walkways as a ladder. Ambrosia’s owner Mishael Sowman found the roof-top walkway still in place and the broken skylight when she arrived at the cafe at 6.45am on Tuesday. “I was concerned that whoever did it was still here,” Mishael told Nelson Weekly. “They didn’t take much – just a small amount of cash, six beers and some sweet cakes." Senior sergeant Blair Hall says the offending over this period has been disappointing. “Our local businesses work hard and this criminal activity is not something the community wants to experience.” He says there was no evidence at this stage to confirm whether or not the offences were connected, however that possibility has not been discounted.

Between midnight and 10.00 am and between 4.00 pm and midnight the trail will be closed from Ravensdown on Lower Queen Street through to Lansdowne Road.

An Alternative Route has been provided along Lower Queen Street during the times this section of the Tasman Great Taste Trail is closed.

Signage Signs have now been erected along Tasman’s Great Taste Trail, from Lower Queen Street (at Ravensdown) to Lansdowne Road, advising trail users of the presence of recreational hunters during the hunting season.

Due to the presence of recreational hunters during the hunting season, all trail users are advised to exercise caution. During this time trail users need to be aware that shot gun blasts may occur. The season opens on Saturday 7 May 2016. The game bird hunting for most species in the Tasman region closes on Sunday 31 July 2016. New partnership announces first round of funding

Lisa Dyer, left, and Marina Gosnell of the Nelson Budget Service at their Selwyn Place office last week. Photo: Simon Bloomberg

Commencing Wednesday 11 May

A grant from Nelson Bays Community Foundation in partnership with The Tindall Foundation will enable the Nelson Budget Service to help even more people get out of debt and on with their lives. The Nelson Bays Community Foundation and The Tindall Foundation formed a partnership last year, aimed at supporting the family and social services sector across the top of the South Island. The two charitable foundations last week announced their first funding round of four donations totalling $28,000, including $9500 to the Nelson Budget Service. Nelson Budget Service manager Marina Gosnell says the funding SP

will help them cope with "a huge increase" in the demand for their services. "We are only contracted to do 350 clients a year and we were seeing in excess of 600 a year," Marina says. "We only have three part-time staff and a small number of very good volunteers and we coped as best we could, but sometimes that's not enough." The service is presently funded by the Ministry of Social Development, the Lotteries Grant Board and Rata Foundation, but Marina says there's still a shortfall and they have had to rely on their financial reserves to keep operating. She says the $9500 grant received last week is a big help and will "give us the capability to look after another 50 clients". "Money is often the biggest problem for many people. It's a huge stresser so we are an essential service. "People come to us when they can't buy the kids' school uniforms or can't pay the power bill or the rent. All those real-life things that happen all the time. "We also see people from all walks of life. Sometimes it can be a one-

off thing or it might be somebody who has been in debt for a long time and has been paying fees on top of fees." Marina says the service provides budgeting advice, advocacy, liaises with creditors and support agencies, supports clients through insolvency options and conducts educational seminars. Nelson Bays Community Fund executive officer, David Kerr, says “the services offered by Nelson Budget Service are closely aligned to one of the core priorities of our funding partnership with The Tindall Foundation. "A lack of budgeting skills is often seen as the underlying problem when people present at foodbanks and emergency housing providers. This donation will help Nelson Budget Service to be able to deliver their services to more people, helping them to improve their understanding of what it means to manage their money and to budget where applicable." The next round under the funding partnership closes on August 16, this year. Details of the application criteria can be found on tindall. org.nz and nbcf.org.nz. Potential applicants are encouraged to begin the application process well in advance to allow time to complete the two-stage application process.

When Eleanor Duncan saw last month’s story on the front page of Nelson Weekly about the historic Haven Rd house being pulled down, the memories flooded back. The home was pulled down bit-by-bit by Luke King, who plans to reuse its materials at a site in The Glen. The house was built between 1904 and 1905 and is listed as a Historic Place Category 2 with Heritage New Zealand. As a born and bred Nelsonian, Eleanor remembers going to Auckland Point School and playing by the fountain on Haven Rd, but she also remembers running through the halls of 81 Haven Rd. Eleanor’s great uncle and aunt, Harry and Ivy Horncastle, owned the house for over two decades back in the thirties and Eleanor still remembers running to their house after school, armed with goodies from her mother. “I used to pop along before and after school with mum’s baking or things she had made for Aunt Ivy.” Eleanor says she spent a lot of time there in the 40s and 50s and knows the house well. “I can still see all the rooms and the big long passage from the front to the back, it was like the black hole of Calcutta on the southerly side,” says Eleanor. “They had the most marvellous garden and they had a massive cage with a magpie, in the back. He quite tickled my fancy, they had taught him how to talk and I spent ages in front of that cage.” Eleanor even remembers the “ginormous old curtain” that hung halfway down the passage to stop the draft, but also served as a tissue for the five children in the winter. “Aunt Ivy used to say everyone stopped and wiped their nose on it on the way through.” While Eleanor doesn’t remember much of her great uncle Harry, she says he was a short Australian who was often working and constantly wearing a suit and tie. Harry managed the Kirkpatrick factory that once stood on Vanguard St making jams and tins, well before the age of Watties. “That was back in the day when horses and carts delivered all the tins.” When we took Eleanor to the site with the torn-down house, her first words were “By jove!”

MP added as a judge of business competition Kate Russell Nelson MP Nick Smith is the latest addition to the line-up of judges for the 2016 Business Accelerator competition, and is challenging entrants to bring new opportunities to the region. The competition, which is now in its third year, aims to help small and medium businesses from any sector or industry, to have access to the experience and tools needed to move forward and achieve growth. The $35,000 prize package from the Business Accelerator partners includes access to pivotal services, and their own advisory board for twelve months. Nick will bring his extensive knowledge of the region to the judging process, and says he hopes to see some fresh, new ideas. “My challenge to entrants is to look for new opportunities for Nelson - I’m amazed at the new businesses that are carving out a niche in Nelson,” he says. “The Business Accelerator is a great opportunity for businesses to demonstrate what they have to offer now, and what their potential is. I’m expecting to see many innovative people utilising the riches our region provides.” Returning judge, Manoli Aerakis, partner at RWCA Accounting, says they have already received five entries for this year’s competition, which has only opened recently. “The whole process is really easy,” he says. “After entries close, we’ll select four-to-five finalists to do a pitch presentation, but it’s really informal - it’s not supposed to be onerous.” Small-to-medium businesses are encouraged to apply by 5pm, Friday 3 June. For more information and to apply, visit http:// innovatenelson.com/business-accelerator/

The Lemongrass Restaurant in Richmond have been delighted with the favourable reviews they have received from happy customers since they opened their doors late last year, and owners Bu-nga and Nuttavut Krataitong would like to thank all of the loyal customers who continue to visit and enjoy their unique Asian Fusion cuisine. The Lemongrass incorporates both Thai and Vietnamese recipes into its mouthwatering menu, along with western elements, to create a delicious and unique repertoire of dishes that can be enjoyed both as both a dine in option and also for takeaway. Bu-nga and Nuttavut also own the popular Thai restaurant, Chai Yo, and their decision to establish The Lemongrass, offering diners a whole new selection of flavours when they wish to eat out, has obviously been a good call, with many customers returning time and time again. The Lemongrass focuses on serving up fresh, clean, lean food, using steaming as their main cooking method, as opposed to cooking as much in oil. Located in what used to be the Arthur Wakefield Tavern on Queen Street, The Lemongrass is proud to offer customers an intimate dining area, as well as outdoor seating and most importantly a menu full of flavour.

From spring rolls and butterfly prawns, to slow cooked pork belly in a ginger garlic curry sauce, fragrant pineapple chicken curry, crispy duck, lemongrass fish and coriander chicken kebabs. With winter just around the corner, The Lemongrass takeaway option means you don’t have to leave the comfort of home to enjoy a delicious meal. And to warm up your winter even more, whenever you order one of their selected range of takeaway curries, they will give you free golden spring rolls to accompany your meal. The Lemongrass also has a bit of a treat in store for Mum when you dine in with them this Mother’s Day. There will be a free drink for every Mum who dines in the restaurant, with a choice of a refreshing beer to accompany her meal, or a glass of the house wine. They are expecting to be fairly busy on Mother’s Day, so they recommend booking your table to avoid missing out. The Lemongrass is open for lunch-time service on Wednesday to Sunday from 11:30am until 2:30pm, while dinner is available on Tuesday to Sunday, from 4.30pm until 9pm. Bookings are encouraged and can be made by calling 544 4838. You’ll find the restaurant at 294 Queen St, Richmond. Business Update. Advt.

Issue 425 3 May 2016

Tsunami evacuation maps public meetings Nelson Tasman Civil Defence and Emergency Management Group (CDEM) has now published comprehensive tsunami evacuation maps for the region. This is a reminder about public meetings being held this month for those interested in learning more about the tsunami risk and evacuation maps. Public meetings in Nelson • Wednesday 4 May, 6.30 – 8.30pm, Nelson North, Nelson North Country Club, Wakapuaka • Saturday 7 May, 1.30 – 3.30pm, Stoke / Richmond, Club Waimea, Queen Street, Richmond • Saturday 7 May, 10am – 12pm, Nelson Central, Tahuna Function Centre

MAYOR'S BOUQUET

This month’s bouquet recipient, Valerie Sirett, is recognised for her dedicated service to the Hospital Chaplaincy. Valerie has shown a selfless commitment to her role as a voluntary Chaplaincy Assistant in Nelson, and is now the longest serving volunteer. Every week for 11 years, Valerie has offered support and encouragement to patients and their families, assisting and guiding them in challenging times. Along with this, Valerie has also dedicated time as a Parish Nurse volunteer at the Nelson Cathedral for eight years. It is a pleasure to be able to publicly acknowledge her contribution in the community, and I’m sure there are many families who will agree that Valerie’s kind heartedness is to be admired. If you know someone you consider worthy of a Mayor's Bouquet, just follow these easy steps: • Submit the nominated recipient's name and contact details, along with 150 words on why they deserve recognition – usually for going the extra mile to perform services to our community unpaid and unsung. • Send via post to Mayoral Bouquet, Nelson City Council, PO Box 645, Nelson 7040 or email to mayorsbouquet@ncc.govt.nz. Remember to include your name and contact details. The Mayor's Bouquet is brought to you in association with Woodlea Florist, Bridge Street, Nelson.

Stoke groups support new facility at Greenmeadows Stoke’s major sports and recreation groups are pleased to see the new multi-use facility at Greenmeadows progressing well. Mayor Rachel Reese met with Stoke rugby, Nelson cricket, Stoke tennis and Stoke Seniors on site at Greenmeadows last week, where they discussed the future for the site. “These groups are major users for this new facility and we've enjoyed working alongside them to plan for this new multi-use facility at Greenmeadows," Mayor Reese says. Stoke Rugby Club Operations Manager, Kim Biggs, says the new building would offer an improved space for their club. “We’re excited about the prospect of being a tenant in the new Stoke Community Centre and we will look to occupy an office space and to utilise

the function rooms.” Stoke Seniors Secretary John Haynes says their members would be looking to use the facility at least four days a week. “I would take this opportunity to congratulate council staff and consultants for the thorough consultation process that it has followed, and the willingness to meet the wishes of particular user organisations.” Nelson Cricket General Manager, David Leonard, says Nelson Cricket has been a major user of Greenmeadows as a hub for junior cricket,

tournaments and trainings, for many years. It intended to continue to use Greenmeadows and the new facility buildings at Greenmeadows for junior cricket matches, tournaments and training sessions. The new facility has recently gained resource consent, and construction is likely to begin later this year. “This facility is part of a long term vision for Stoke,” says Mayor Reese. “Council is committed to supporting our fastest growing suburb and to providing good quality and functional civic spaces.”

Taking action to care for Orphanage Stream A group of Stoke neighbours, young and old, came together last month to learn more about how to care for their local stream. Parent Raewyn Wilson had approached Council as she was interested in forming a group to help look after Orphanage Stream, which is enjoyed by her young family and their friends. Melanie McColghan from Tiakina te Taiao and two of Council’s environmental officers answered questions on how to look after the stream, the impact of weather and stream flow, the pros and cons of weed growth in the stream, the 17 different varieties of fish that inhabit Orphanage Stream, and what they need to survive. Raewyn says it was lovely to see so many come out to enjoy the day. “It was a great chance to get to know our neighbours better and learn more about this wonderful resource, Orphanage Stream. We were so thankful to see such a range of ages as well.” A number of people signalled they were interested in forming a group of ‘guardians’ to look after a stretch of the stream. Plans include painting fish on the nearby stormwater drains to remind people that only ‘rain is for

drains’, and a community planting day in early July, with plants and advice provided by Council, to create a better habitat for eels and native fish. As part of its environmental restoration programme Nelson Nature, Council is keen to encourage other neighbourhood groups in Nelson to care for a section of their local stream. This may involve ensuring no rubbish gets into the waterway, weeding out unwanted pest plants, monitoring for stream quality, observing aquatic and bird life, and planting where this is needed. If you would like to adopt and care for part of a stream and have ideas about how you would like to help, please contact Council’s Environmental programmes officer, phone 546 0200 or email susan.moore-lavo@ncc.govt.nz.

Water meter readings The current residential water meter reading round is continuing until the end of May.

Centre of New Zealand track repaired Repairs to the main track on the Centre of New Zealand are now complete. Thanks to everyone for their patience while we worked on this. It’s looking really good now and this is a great time of year to take a stroll up the hill and check it out.

The meter readers are currently in Stoke and will then move through the city centre, The Wood, Atawhai and ending at the Glen at the end of May. We ask that you please check and ensure that the area surrounding your meter box, and the box itself, is clear and easily accessible. The meter readers will be active from 8am – 6pm, seven days a week, including public holidays. They will be identifiable by their hi-visibility vests which say ‘Water Meter Reader’ and ‘DataCol’. If you don’t think meter readers will be able to access your meter for any reason, please call 0800 870 008 so that suitable arrangements can be made to have the meter read. Some meters will also be checked to ensure they are still recording accurately. This involves filling a 10 litre bucket with water, and should the meter need to be replaced, the water will need to be turned off to do this. If you are home, we will advise you of this. If no one is home, a letter will be left in your letter box letting you know that Council contractors have been. All water used through the meter is charged at $1.7843 per cubic metre, GST inclusive. The invoice / statements are posted out usually within two weeks of the meter being read. They will be due for payment on 15 June 2016.

Nelson Prosthodontics has offered specialist dental care in this region for over twenty years. We specialise in restoring smiles, whether replacing a single tooth with a veneer or crown, right through to full denture replacement, like David. David now eats what he likes, laughs without worrying what his teeth will do. His confidence has returned. Many people have a deteriorated set of natural teeth that they’re not proud of. They are terrified of having them out and wearing dentures. Dentures are no longer the final choice. David, along with many of our patients, have chosen this state-of-theart dental process. One of the best things about this process; in most people, teeth can be removed and implants put in on the same day! In the majority of cases we can place implants in the morning and progress to temporary teeth on those implants by afternoon.

Also, we are looking for some fabulous volunteers to help deliver Meals on Wheels in the Stoke and Nelson areas. Our Visitor Service volunteers help maintain links between people living in an aged care facility and their local community. A community visitor befriends a lonely resident of an aged care facility and will spend time once a week with them. This is a growing service and we need more empathetic volunteers.

The three girls say looking after yourself and seeking balance is important year round, but especially in winter when exercise and health can become a struggle. It’s about balance and having all the building blocks in place including exercise, nutrition and sleep. Women's Wellness will run from 6.30-8.30pm on Wednesday, 18 May, in the Old St John’s on Hardy Street. Don’t let the ‘flu get you. As well as encouraging you to protect yourself from influenza this winter, at Nelson Marlborough Health we also offer free ‘flu vaccinations to our staff. People who work in our hospitals, in our communities and in your homes, have been offered vaccinations to limit the spread of influenza among themselves, our patients and visitors. Pamela Kiesanowski, Director of Nursing and Midwifery, says that everyone at Nelson Marlborough Health has a duty to protect patients and visitors from infectious viruses like influenza. “Let’s not catch influenza and let’s not spread it. We expect staff to take all available precautions to avoid putting others at risk from a debilitating and dangerous virus. “Immunisation is the best protection available against influenza,” Pamela says. Barbara Gibson, an infection-control Nurse Specialist, says that two new strains in the influenza vaccines for 2016 are expected to offer better protection this winter. “We are making it as convenient as possible for our staff to be vaccinated, with dropin clinics running at Nelson and Wairau hospitals, and ‘ward vaccinators’ available on all wards. Staff working in the community are also eligible for vaccination via Nelson Bays Primary Health,” Barbara says. Jason MacDonald’s new massage clinic, Good Massage, at 207 Bridge Street, opened on Monday and provides high-quality sports massage, deep tissue and neuromuscular massage therapy. The self-proclaimed adventurer has done everything from tramping and sailing the world to working as a diving, rafting and abseiling instructor, and plenty in between. So no matter what your activity or occupation, Jason understands the physical demands or stresses you place on your muscles. Good Massage is the perfect stop for those who have simply strained a muscle, elite sportspeople and teams recovering from physical injuries, to those suffering headaches or fatigue from stress and tension. Jason also excels in post-operative recovery and improving your range of motion. With a Diploma in Massage Therapy, Jason brings 14 years in clinical practice to the table and has worked with the All Blacks, Crusaders, Chiefs and the 2004 New Zealand Olympic Team including Nick Willis, Moss Burmester and Beatrice Faumuina. opinion: Fans bite back at makos logo Jacob Page

Fan frustration at the new Tasman Makos logo goes far deeper than a simple brand change. For 10 years, the Makos have been the envy of the rest of the country, a seemingly never-ending stream of good PR, good fan engagement and good results on the field. That changed in recent weeks when the Makos decided to change their logo from the traditional Mako shark to what appears to be two fins drawn in

The makos original logo. an oval resembling a rugby ball. And it seems the union were not expecting the backlash they got. For the first time in a long time – maybe in the franchise’s history – they left their fans out in the cold. There was no public consultation done on a new logo, apparently the Tasman Rugby Union did not

want it to become another flag referendum. That’s the misguided thinking in a nutshell. For an organisation like the Makos, that relies on people investing their money and time to watch games and buy merchandise, to not involve its fans in a logo change is a mistake. Such autocracy would be fine in the big regions like Auckland, Wellington or Canterbury, but the people of Nelson and Marlborough feel like they own

Perspiration aplenty, Nelson Simon Mardon was his own harshest critic following his third victory in the Nelson Shoe Clinic Half Marathon at Saxton Field on Sunday. The 43-year-old wanted to go faster than his winning time of just one hour 18 minutes and 37 seconds. He almost five minutes clear of his nearest competitor but believed he could have run better. “I did what I needed to, but you’d always like to go faster. “I knew I wasn’t running well so I just wanted to finish with some rhythm. Simon says he has raced the event “on and off ” 10 times over the past 20 years, but got really serious about it 11 years

The best thing about the Makos is the team is relatable. That’s where the TRU has failed, by not allowing the fans to be part of this process they have failed them. Makos fans, as well as current and formers players, have all bitten into to the issue and demanded the TRU have a rethink. There’s no shame in the union doing that either. After all, happy fans are happy to put their hands into their wallets when the season starts.

The women’s event was won by Appleby’s Paula Canning. Her time of one hour 24 minutes and 24 seconds was six minutes faster than her nearest female competitor and good enough for fourth overall.

Nelson teams continued to dominate rugby’s Tasman Trophy competition. The middle of the table looks congested with eight teams within six points of each other after this weekend’s results. Taylor's Contracting Wanderers continued their impressive run when they won a 93-point try-fest 57-36 over Renwick away from home. Galbraith Nelson got their campaign back on track with a convincing 47-24 win over Central. Star & Garter Waimea Old Boys avoided a potential banana-skin by getting a tough away win in Kaikoura, 28-13 over East Coast. Wakatu Hotel Marist made full use of home conditions by thrashing Moutere 57-17. Freeman Roofing Stoke survived a late surge from Waitohi to win 2320. Kahurangi wore down Harlequins 24-20 and earned a crucial four-try bonus point at the same time. In the UC Championship secondary school rugby competition, both Nelson teams earned valuable away wins to start the season. The newly-formed Waimea Combined scored a confidence-boosting 23-10 win over St Thomas of

Nelson College are keen to return to the top end of the ladder this season and they started their campaign with a 38-22 win at Rangiora High School. Second five Jakob Dabinette scored three times in the victory. Waimea Combined will play highflying Marlborough Boys’ College on Wednesday at Waimea College. Finn’s career takes giant stride Locally Owned and Operated

Jacob Page

Mike Pero Nelson Giants forward Finn Delany is fast becoming one of the bright spots of the NBL season. Even during the Giants’ recent losing streak, the 20-year-old 6 foot 6 inch Nelson College old boy has turned heads and established himself as a key man at both ends of the court. That determination has seen him earn a two-year contract with the New Zealand Breakers last week. Finn spent his basketball childhood wanting to have the cornrows hair, tattoos and swagger of NBA legend Allen Iverson. “I was obsessed with him,” says Finn. “His style, the way he played, the way he looked. “Every Christmas, and my Mum still has it written down somewhere, I used to ask to be like Allen Iverson.” He says tussles with his brother were common. “My brother was a great player in high school, but once I got to high school things changed and I don’t think he was too happy that I could dunk before him.”

Finn is shooting at 59 per cent this season and averaging more than 15 points a game in 2016 compared to just six points in 2015. He’s also averaging seven rebounds a game compared to three last season. Finn says his time as a developmental player at the Breakers has helped him become a more well-rounded player. “I think my game awareness is better now,” he says. “I know what I’m good at, what I need to work on and how I can best contribute to the team.” The Giants’ recent struggles seem worse than they are, he says. “There’s frustration there as you’d expect with four losses, but it looks worse than it is,” Finn says. “We are fourth in the comp with a month to go, so we just have to pull ourselves out of it.” Finn says playing alongside childhood heroes like Mika Vukona and Phill Jones was initially daunting, but both have had a massive impact on his career so far. On Saturday night, Finn’s 26 points helped the Giants beat the Canterbury Rams 10797 at the Trafalgar Centre. This Friday the Giants travel to play Taranaki.

Your Family’s Health vs Your Money When someone in your family is diagnosed with a serious illness you have three choices;

1. Wait until they can be treated in the public system, (can be 6 months +++) and hope they survive long enough to receive the treatment. Due to the lack of funding for the Public Health Service, you can experience long delays before receiving treatment and many of the important drugs are

Skills day a success for Nelson

Jacob Page

The Nelson Rugby Club’s JAB Skills Day saw 85 kids from around the Nelson region learn new skills and then implement them. Nelson JAB club captain Quentin Harwood says the players all learnt the basic of running, catching, passing, kicking and tackling, in the morning, before a series of games and challenges put those new skills to the test in the afternoon. Quentin says he was delighted to have 85 players turn up to the first event of its kind the club had run. The day was led by former Tasman Makos

Richmond remain football’s team to beat Jacob Page Undefeated Richmond Athletic have underlined their favourites tag in Nelson Bays division one football competition by tipping over last year’s champions Suburbs Seals 2-0 on Saturday. Both goals came late in the second half in what was a niggly affair at Jubilee Park. Suburbs hit the frame of the goal twice in the opening 10 minutes, but Richmond looked to have more time on the ball and certainly won the midfield battle. The deadlock was broken by a well taken penalty from Richmond centre back Darryn Cunningham, with substitute Drew Gaskin scrambling the ball over the line to make the game safe as it headed into injury time. Richmond coach Matt Campbell says his team wore Suburbs down

after the opening 20 minutes, despite not physically being at their best. “We had to stay in the grind of the game and the first goal was going to be important. “That’s the difference this year, we have the quality to get that goal and keep things tight until we do.” Suburbs Brandon Kay was a menace on attack, as was Callum Rollo, but they lacked the final touch at crucial times. Richmond are now six points clear of Suburbs and Tahuna at the top of the table. In other results: A hattrick from Harrison Pine helped Marlborough Mariners to a 6-0 romp over Wakefield; Thomas Amasia and David Maisey each scored twice as Nelson College thumped Nelson Suburbs first XI 8-0, and FC Nelson continued their resurgence with a 2-0 win over Tahuna FC.
